How the test works

  1. Slide down to your lowest note.
Sing "ah" and go down slowly. The test keeps the lowest note you hold for about a second.
  2. Slide up to your highest note.
Stop where it still feels easy. Notes you have to force don't count as part of your usable range.
  3. Read your range and voice type.
Your range is shown in notes (C4 is middle C) and in hertz, next to the typical ranges below.

Vocal range chart by voice type

Voice typeTypical rangeFrequency

BaritoneA2 – A4110 – 440 Hz

AltoF3 – F5175 – 698 Hz
Mezzo-sopranoA3 – A5220 – 880 Hz
SopranoC4 – C6262 – 1047 Hz

Voice types overlap, and range is only one part of them. Tone color and where your voice sits most comfortably matter too, so treat the closest type as a starting point.

Questions

How do I find my vocal range?

Sing the lowest note you can produce comfortably and hold it, then the highest. The distance between them is your range. This test measures both from your microphone and names the notes.

What is a good vocal range?

Most untrained adults sing about one and a half to two octaves comfortably. Trained singers often reach three. Singing the notes you have in tune matters more than the size of the range.

Can I extend my vocal range?

Usually by a few semitones, mostly at the top, with regular relaxed practice. Stop if you feel pain or strain.

Is my voice recorded?

No. The pitch is measured in your browser while you sing. No audio is uploaded or stored.

Why does my result change between tries?

Your voice changes with warm-up, time of day and tiredness. Test after a few minutes of humming for your most accurate range.
